Holiday Home Styling Tips from Interior Designer Kevin Gray

Decorating for the holidays can be overwhelming, especially when your home is for sale! Whether you’re decorating for seasonal entertaining or to bring holiday cheer to your family, there are many decisions to make – a theme, your color palette, which rooms to decorate, where to buy your decorations and how to pull it all together so it looks festive, not tacky!

Here are interior designer Kevin Gray’s holiday home styling tips to decorate your home for the festivities!

Interior Designer Kevin Gray’s Tips for Styling Your Home for the Holidays

Your holiday decorating style should take a cue from your home’s current style. Holiday decorations should complement the pieces you already have. Seasonal decorations are a fun way to introduce colors and pieces that you don’t want to live with year-round but add a festive seasonal touch.

1. Color Theme
Pick a holiday color theme that compliments your home’s decor. White, gold and silver decorations bring glamour and sophistication to any decor.

2. Flowers
Flowers are festive and holiday arrangements, wreaths and an elegant way to decorate your home. If you’ve kept your holiday decorations neutral, brightly colored poinsettias or amaryllis in red and green deliver some traditional colors, while paperwhites add glamorous white and green accents.

3. Candles & Lighting
Candles and white twinkle lights elevate your holiday decor, are neutral yet festive and bring color and glamour to the inside and out. Unscented candles are a safe choice, and if you choose scented candles select scents that are soft and won’t overwhelm.

4. Front Door & Outside
A festive holiday wreath welcomes both your guests and prospective buyers. Fresh cut cedar branches accented with birch limbs, pine cones and berry branches to your entry, balcony or terrace. Garland decorated with white or silver bows brings a festive touch to a doorway, gate or fence.

5. Kitchen
Kitchens are known as the heart of the home, and adding a festive touch to your kitchen during the holidays is important for your family and potential buyers. A gorgeous floral arrangement, a decorated gingerbread house and a plate of fresh Christmas cookies will please both your family and your visitors!

Holiday Home Styling

If your home is for sale during the holidays, you have special holiday decorating needs. Your decor should meet your family’s needs and be festive yet neutral to appeal to potential buyers.

Yes, if your home is for sale you can still decorate for the holidays! When your home is for sale during the holidays, people need to imagine themselves there and their future lifestyle. Keep your holiday decorations simple and elegant to appeal to everyone, and use seasonal decor to style your home for the festivities.
